Save the Date: Screening of « The Threshold of the Desert » in New York
Last year on 2 October 2013, I hosted the screening of a truly moving documentary, “The Threshold of the Desert”, in the European Parliament and had the pleasure of meeting the documentary main star Najat Aziz, who shared with us her story of women’s empowerment.
If we take a quick look at the countries of the European Union, and make a quick comparison with the rest of the world, we might get the impression that we have made so much progress in Europe that equality between women and men has been reached. Often we hear that the fight of the feminists is over, and the feminist movement itself is not relevant as such any more.
After a stimulating exchange with the Secretary Generals of the PES Members Parties in Warsaw and in the presence of the PES Common Candidates Designate, Martin Schulz, on the upcoming 2014 European Elections, I joined my Spanish friends in Madrid for the PSOE political Conference.
On Monday, FEPS organised a fringe roundtable discussion on “Woman up!” enhancing women’s employment opportunities in the frame of this 3rd edition of the Call to Europe entitled “Beyond austerity: Building European solidarity”.
Before the summer break, I would like to announce the screening of an inspiring documentary on 2 October, which I will host in the European Parliament, The Threshold of Desert directed by Ramon Vila, which shows great examples of women empowerment stories in the Arab world.
I warmly welcome the commitment and priority of the French government, towards gender equality and women’s rights, implemented by my friend Najat Vallaud-Belkacem. Despite the current crisis that Europe is going through, France has understood that we do not need less but more gender equality when working on ways out of the crisis.
As PES Women has been repeatedly saying in the frame of the joint campaign “Your Future is My Future: a European Youth Guarantee now”, we need to include a gender perspective while addressing youth unemployment.
Yesterday, I welcomed to the PES headquarters an Indian delegation of gender experts invited by the Brussels office of the Friederich Ebert Stiftung (FES) with whom PES Women has had numerous meetings and possibilities of cooperation in Brussels and Budapest. I was pleased to see that this delegation of gender experts was a mixed group of women and men working on women’s rights issue, an important signal that gender equality is a common objective.
My third visit to the US this year took place thanks to the invitation as special guest to the 33rd Annual Parties of Your Choice Gala organised by the Women’s Campaign Fund, a cross-party initiative to support women to run for office. The Women’s Campaign Fund, presided by the inspiring Sam Bennett, has a philosophy to be summarised by 5 key words; Early, At all Levels, Bipartisan, Bold and Diverse. I believe this is exactly the same approach we need for European Women with just over a year away from European Elections.
