New President brings North Macedonia one step closer to European future

The election of Stevo Pendarovski as the new President of the country comes shortly after the conclusion of the historic Prespa agreement, which saw North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev negotiate with his Greek counterpart, Alexis Tsipras, to end a long-running dispute between the two countries. The victory in the Presidential elections is yet another sign that the North Macedonian people support SDSM’s vision for the country.

PES President Sergei Stanishev congratulated President Stevo Pendarovski, the new social-democratic President of the Republic of North Macedonia, on the result:

“Your campaign was positive, hopeful, and forward-looking, and this aspirational approach was endorsed by the voters. It is yet another sign that the North Macedonian people support SDSM’s vision for your nation. This election result brings Republic of North Macedonia one step closer to joining the family of European nations. Your country has a proud, positive contribution to make to the European Union. I hope the social democratic government in your country, and now also the social democratic President, will continue their efforts to secure a positive future for the Republic of North Macedonia and its citizens.”
