Prime ministers from the Party of European Socialists once again call for European solidarity and joined efforts on the topic of migration. At the PES preparation meeting for the informal summit in Salzburg today, the progressive leaders expressed their concern about the latest actions from the populist and far right coalitions and governments in Europe, who are trying to shift the debate back to false solutions.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:
"Europe must know who enters the European Union territory but also should be capable of showing humanity with those fleeing war, starvation and persecution. We are controlling the borders."

“The far-right’s cruel approach to migration is doomed to fail, just as the doors-wide-open policy is doomed to fail. The only way to manage the current inflows of people is through solidarity and shared responsibility”, Stanishev added.

The PES leaders welcomed the efforts of High Representative Federica Mogherini on the progress achieved to reduce irregular arrivals and to cooperate with third countries. She briefed the prime ministers on the progress in her ongoing work towards Europe’s common defence and border policy.

Prime ministers and leaders of PES parties expressed their support for the process of the Common Candidate for president of the European commission as a transparent and inclusive solution in the name of the citizens. They all agree that the European Elections in 2019 are a decisive point for Europe and the social-democratic family should work for a bigger turnout and should perform at the top of its potential.

“We have to inspire Europeans to vote, so they can save the European Dream - a Union of peace, cooperation and prosperity”, Sergei Stanishev said.
