PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I can’t think of anything more undemocratic or inhuman than wishing the death of your opponent in the run-up to an election. Nicola Gruevski has gone too far. This is a violation of the mutual goodwill which is the basis of the Przino agreements that led to this election. Macedonia doesn’t deserve this campaign or this type of leadership – it is a disgrace.”
The PES fully supported the EU-US sponsored negotiations to overcome the Macedonian institutional crisis through a just, fair election. Several PES delegations have visited the country this year.
“Our candidate Zoran Zaev has our full support to contest Nikola Gruevski’s record in government, defeat him in the election and get rid of the intimidation and abuse of power of recent years. FYR Macedonia deserves a progressive, European, open leader who can take the country forward and fight unemployment and decline.”
