PES closely monitoring situation in Romania
The PES has been closely monitoring the situation around the justice system reforms in Romania.
Following the recent news of the indictment of the Romanian candidate for the European Prosecutor's Office, the Party of European Socialists expresses its deepest concerns on this matter.
At our recent Congress in Madrid, the leadership of the PES held frank exchanges with the leadership of the PSD regarding the Rule of Law.
This discussion continued with the Romanian prime minister last week at the PES preparation meeting ahead of the European Council in Brussels.
We continue to back the important work undertaken by the European Commission and First Vice-President Frans Timmermans to scrutinise the justice system reforms in Romania. The European Commission is sending clear legal messages to the Romanian Government and the PES is sending clear political messages to the PSD. The independence of the judiciary and fundamental European values must be respected.
