PES deeply regrets Trump’s sabotage of Iran deal

PES president Sergei Stanishev said: “It is very worrying to have global stability in the hands of a person who is constantly revising the U.S. position on different international agreements.

The nuclear agreement with Iran was achieved after great effort, and it has worked: it has deterred Iran from pursuing non-civilian use of its nuclear technology, and it has successfully diminished Iran’s threat to the West and the international order.

President Trump is giving it away in return for nothing. His concerns on non-compliance should be addressed to the only relevant authority: The International Atomic Energy Agency.”

The PES has always been supportive to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the personal efforts of the High Representative Federica Mogherini in bringing more stability to the region. The deal with Iran is a great example of successful multilateralism, under EU leadership. We call on Iran and all other stakeholders to pursue the preservation of the core principles of this agreement.
