PES welcomes COP24 Climate change deal
The Party of European Socialists fully support the range of measures agreed during the United Nations Climate Change conference in Katowice, Poland.
The PES has consistently argued that climate action is needed to keep warming of the planet to maximum 1.5 degrees Celsius. We have repeatedly committed to implement the Paris Agreement and to fight the climate crisis by cutting emissions, phasing out fossil fuels, and transforming Europe’s industrial base.
Delegates representing countries from across the world met in Poland to negotiate and sign a plan - the Katowice Agreement - which aims to make the Paris climate pact operational in 2020.
PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“We back this deal - protecting the environment, tackling the climate crisis and stopping pollution must be a priority for Europe and the world. Unfortunately, global efforts are not yet high enough to keep the world on track with the Paris Agreement’s objectives. The Katowice Agreement is the next step to ensure that countries keep their promises to cut carbon emissions. This agreement is a foundation as we push for more ambitious targets.
“At our party Congress in Lisbon earlier this month we passed a comprehensive resolution on our plans to lead the green transition and to protect the environment. We want a just transition - a transition that supports workers, communities and industries as they adapt to the urgent changes needed. These policies will be at the core of the PES manifesto for the upcoming European elections.”
