It also highlights the need for urgent action to implement these policy objectives.
The pillar was proclaimed by all EU governments on 17 November following a long campaign by the PES and its partners. The proclamation was widely welcomed, but at the time the PES also noted the need for concrete measures to put it into practice.
The PES particularly welcomes the general commitment to supporting wage growth, which is in line with the principles of the pillar and matches PES’s call for decent wages.
PES president Sergei Stanishev said:
“We welcomed the pillar of social rights, but we also said that the European Commission and national governments must be willing to commit to a clear Social Action Plan such as we have proposed, in order to put it into practice.
“As has been highlighted by our partner organisation SOLIDAR, the European semester is the prime opportunity for the Commission to do so.
“We particularly welcome the Commission’s commitment to boost investment and real wage growth, and we look forward to immediate practical measures to implement this.”
