Progressive parties meet to prepare for annual Council in Lisbon

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“The PES will hold its annual Council this year in Lisbon. This is an opportunity not only to gather the whole political family together and discuss the way forward, but also to highlight the excellent work being done in Portugal by the government of António Costa – proving that when progressive policies go hand in hand with economic renewal, the benefits are shared across the whole of society.”

The PES’s highest decision-making body, the Presidency, is made up of representatives from member and associate parties across Europe.

The Presidency also discussed the first draft of a PES political resolution to be adopted in Lisbon, on the need for a stronger focus on social priorities for Europe.

And members of the Presidency expressed their unanimous support to Nicholas Papadopoulos, leader of the DIKO party in Cyprus, who will be running for president of the country in the election early next year.

Among other items on the agenda today were:

  • Evaluation of next steps for social democratic parties in Europe
  • The ongoing campaign for the EU social pillar
  • Preparations for the European election campaign in 2019

The PES Council in Lisbon will take place on 1-2 December, with PES Women and PES Activists holding their own annual meetings on 30 November.
