Ylva Johansson has the right approach on Home Affairs

The prospective Commissioner for Home Affairs was outlining her positions in front of a Parliamentary hearing on the incoming European Commission. Addressing MEPs, Ylva Johansson emphasised that the EU’s values must be a guide to Europe’s Home Affairs. In this context, she set out her ambition to ensure legal pathways to Europe remain open through a well-functioning system, based on a new common European pact on migration and asylum. The Commission-designate also outlined proposals to build an effective Security Union, fight all forms of radicalisation, and foster cooperation in the area of security.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“Cooperation is the bedrock of the European project, and the approach of Ylva Johansson is exactly what the EU needs to ensure we have a well-functioning migration and asylum policy, an effective Security Union, and a strong Schengen area. It is important that now, as our democracies face up against populism and extremism, that we take an approach to Home Affairs that is founded on the core European values of collaboration, solidarity, and respect for human rights. This is Ylva Johansson’s approach, and the PES is proud to back her for Commissioner for Home Affairs.”

A highly respected expert in the fields of employment, integration, health and welfare, Ylva Johansson is National Minister for Employment and also a former Minister for Schools and Minister for Health and Elderly Care, and a member of the Swedish Parliament. As Commissioner for Home Affairs, she will oversee the Commission’s work on internal security and a New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
