On Saturday 29 March, the Youth Union of the Bulgarian Socialist Party met in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia to elect their new board and to discuss the issues affecting young people across the country. PES Women President Zita Gurmai addressed over 700 delegates from across the country, with a clear focus on youth unemployment and gender equality.

The PES common candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission received a stunning welcome in Madrid on Sunday. Martin Schulz was invited to address the PSOE campaign launch by lead MEP candidate and PES Vice-President Elena Valenciano and PSOE General Secretary Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba.

On Saturday 21st of February, Elena Valenciano, PES Vice-President and head of the PSOE list, kicked off the #knockthevote training with 80 PES activists of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) in Madrid. Valenciano said: "The European elections in May are decisive for the future of European citizens. If we want to fight youth unemployment, we must act now on all political levels."

The Parti Socialiste (PS) named its top candidates for May’s European Parliament elections at their congress in Brussels this weekend. Marie Arena, Senator and former Minister-President of the Federation of Wallonia-Brussels, is heading the list of candidates.

Today, progressive parties from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa came together for a two day conference in Amman to discuss a common progressive agenda. The Conference started with opening speeches from PES President and BSP leader Sergei Stanishev, President of the S&D Group Hannes Swoboda, Jamil Nimri, member of Parliament of the Jordanian Social Democrats, and Hussein Gohar, chair of the Arab Social Democratic Forum.

After a long series of negotiations, representatives of the European Council and the European Parliament, headed by S&D MEP Elisa Ferreira reached a strong deal on the banking union early this morning. The negotiators agreed that the cost of an ailing bank should be covered by the banking sector itself, and that taxpayers should no longer have to carry the burden of the excess of the unbridled financial sector.

Yesterday the 16th of March a referendum was organized in Crimea where voters could chose between joining Russia, or the return of Ukraine to its status under the 1992 constitution, which would give the region much more autonomy. There was no option for those who wanted the constitution to remain unchanged. According to exit polls, 96% of Crimean voters chose to join Russia.
