Albania, Tirana. On the Skanderbeg square, supporters of the Socialist Party of Albania celebrate the victory of the legislative elections of the 25th April 2021.

The Party of European Socialists welcomes Prime Minister Edi Rama’s victory in the general election on Sunday, where his Socialist Party won an outright majority.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“We commend Edi Rama on his impressive result in a difficult election held under the constraints of the pandemic. We are glad that he can continue to lead Albania through the path of needed reform and modernisation in order to bring the country closer to EU standards and the EU.

"Our political family has consistently supported the Albanian Socialist party and the country’s European path and we look forward to continuing this common work.”

The OSCE has labelled the elections as generally well organised and the EU has endorsed the result through High Representative Josep Borrell and Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi who have called on all stakeholders to respect the results of the election.

The PES supports the start of accession negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia as stated by its presidency in 2020, building on the positive results from the Western Balkans Summit in 2018. We will continue to encourage reform and support both countries in their European ambitions.
