European Socialists and Democrats mourn the loss of Mário Soares
European Socialists and Democrats will always remember Mário Soares - the father of democracy in Portugal and founder of the Portuguese Socialist Party, who passed away on 7 January 2017. In this sad moment, we pay tribute to his lifetime work, dedication to the public cause, to his political legacy and services rendered to the PS Portugal, to Socialist values, to Portugal and to Europe.
PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “Mário Soares was not only the father of democracy in Portugal; he was the flagship in the battle for freedom, democracy and social rights in Europe and in the world. Even in his very last days, Mário Soares was in the political fight for social justice, being a vocal critic of austerity policies of the EU. He will remain in history as a political leader and a man who devoted his life to the good of the people."
The PES expresses its condolences to the family of Soares, to the Socialist Party of Portugal and to all progressive parties and people around the world who are now mourning the loss of this remarkable man.
