The Party of European Socialists is deeply concerned by the prison sentence against the member of the Turkish parliament and prominent journalist Enis Berberoglu, from our associate party CHP. This seems to be yet another political trial.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“Turkey is becoming a massive prison under Erdogan. He is leading a constant purge of all Turkish institutions and the Grand National Assembly is not an exception. It is particularly disgraceful to prosecute a representative of the people, Enis Berberoglu, for doing an honest job. Enis Berberoglu didn’t disclose any state secrets, that is just an excuse. It is the plot he helped to uncover that should be investigated by the Turkish justice system”.

“We fully support the protests announced by the leader of CHP Kemal Kilicdaroglu against this arbitrary decision. We encourage them to resist in the name of democracy and justice”.
